Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts.

The Richmond Henrico Health District (RHHD) is searching for a Community Health Worker Supervisor for the Resource Centers located throughout the Richmond community. The Resource Centers are the District’s satellite health centers located in Richmond’s six large public housing communities and the Southwood community that focus on a relationship-based approach to trust building among residents. This position is responsible for oversight of day-to-day Center operations, and oversees the program and supervision of 8 Community Health Workers (CHWs). The RHHD Community Health Worker program was established in 2011 and is a team of dedicated, passionate staff who have led the state in Community Health Worker programming.

In addition, this position will ensure effective community health initiatives in collaboration with the Community Health Nurse Sr and CHWs. Community initiatives include programs focusing on: chronic disease, substance use disorder, food access, mental health, and connection to medical and social resources. Additional responsibilities include assisting in gathering data for programmatic and grant requirements, developing community partnerships, monitoring the quality of community health worker services, case management and navigation oversight and monitoring of the Resource Center budget. This position will be located within the Resource Center clinics. This position will need to obtain a Community Health Worker certification within 18 months of hire.

Position plays an integral lead role in the development, implementation, maintenance, and evaluation of community-based public health initiatives. Collaborates with District staff and community partners to promote health & prevent disease. Provides direct supervision to the District general community health educators and leads prevention programs. The position will assist the District Health Director engage and guide local policy makers in their efforts to address and develop policies that impact public health. Provides public information and leads public relations activities for health district or office.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of public health issues; public and private health care practices; program evaluation; planning and policy development; community organizing; survey methods and use of data and health education principles
• Demonstrated skills in program planning; implementation and evaluation; community assessment and organization; writing reports and program plans; public speaking; effective collaboration with other professionals and the general public
• Excellent organization and presentation skills; strong networking abilities and effective oral and written communication skills; ability to foster good working relationships with professionals and community groups to achieve desired outcomes
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; problem solve; make effective decisions and develop program goals and objectives; evaluate and direct program outcomes, impacts and processes; manage a multi-disciplinary state-wide program
• Experience with grant writing, budget management, and supervision of staff
• Knowledge and experience in use of computers and computer applications, including Internet, Microsoft Office, and various Mail applications
• May travel and work some weekends and/or evening hours

Preferred Qualifications:

• Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) for Health Educators preferred
• Master’s degree in Public Health, Public Administration or related field, or equivalent training and/or experience preferred
• Previous experience in community health and the assessment/improvement process preferred
